A Historic Architectural Treasure
Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House, is one of Portland, Maine’s most treasured landmarks. This beautifully preserved Victorian-era home is a masterpiece of Italianate architecture, drawing visitors from across the country. The mansion showcases intricate woodwork, stunning wall paintings, and luxurious period furnishings, making it a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.
The History of Victoria Mansion
Built between 1858 and 1860, Victoria Mansion was originally the summer home of Ruggles Sylvester Morse, a wealthy hotelier from New Orleans. The mansion was designed by architect Henry Austin, known for his distinctive Italianate style.
After Morse’s passing, the mansion changed hands and was eventually purchased by the Libby family, who preserved much of its original charm. In 1941, it was turned into a museum, allowing the public to step back in time and experience the grandeur of 19th-century luxury living.
