Moody Beach was named after George H. Moody, who ran the local coast-side store and post office until 1975. The neighborhood emerged in the late 1800s during Wells’ development boom led by Charles Tibbetts and William Eaton.

Following the landmark 1989 Bell v. Town of Wells decision, property owners secured private rights to parts of the shoreline while the public retained beach access for fishing, fowling, and navigation.
